Canada names long track speed skating team for World Cups in Salt Lake City and Calgary

27 Canadian skaters will take part in home World Cup at Olympic Oval in Calgary from November 21-23

CALGARY, ALBERTA – Speed Skating Canada announced today the provisional composition of its long track team for the first two ISU World Cup Speed Skating events of the 2025-26 season, scheduled for November 14-16 in Salt Lake City and November 21-23 in Calgary.

Canada won 16 medals across six World Cup stops during the 2024-25 season, including two gold, eight silver and six bronze. The stakes this season will be even higher, as athletes will battle to earn Olympic quota spots for their country and to secure their own qualification for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano-Cortina.

A total of 23 skaters – 12 men and 11 women – will wear the maple leaf at the season opening World Cup in Salt Lake City. An additional three men and one woman (identified with *) will join the team for the second stop on home ice at Calgary’s Olympic Oval. The individual distances and team events each skater will compete in will be confirmed at a later date.

The team nominations were made in accordance with relevant High Performance Bulletin following the 2025 Canadian Long Track Championships presented by Intact Insurance, which were hosted last week in Calgary. Team composition will not be made official until the appeal period has passed and a decision on those appeals – should any be received – has been made.

Following the North American stops, athletes will make their way to Europe for the two final Olympic qualifying World Cups in Heerenveen (December 5-7) and Hamar (December 12-14). Their performances on the international stage will be used to secure Olympic quota spots for Canada, as well as to determine which skaters may be pre-selected for the Milano-Cortina 2026 team. In the majority of situations, a skater ranked in the top-8 of an individual distance following the World Cups will prequalify their spot for the Games. The remaining Olympic quota spots will be filled at the Long Track Canada Cup Skate-Off in Quebec City from January 3-6, 2026.
