LONG TRACK
Consistent, powerful strides and masterful technique is what sets long track speed skating apart. One of the original winter Olympic sports in 1924, organized international competitions have been taking place for over 125 years. Racing in pairs — counterclockwise on a two-lane 400m oval track — skaters race against the clock in a bid to record the fastest time over distances ranging from 500m to 10,000m, as well as in Team Sprint, Team Pursuit and Mass Start events. From first to final lap, long track keeps skaters on the edge of their blades, and spectators on the edge of their seats.
In the Beginning
The roots of ice skating date back over 1,000 years to the waterways of Scandinavia and the Netherlands, where men laced animal bones to their footwear and glided across frozen lakes and rivers. The first skate with an iron blade was developed by a Scotsman in 1592, giving birth to the sport of speed skating.
The first official speed skating race, covering a distance of about 24 kilometers, was held on the Fens in England in 1763. Over 100 years later, the International Skating Union (ISU) became the first international winter sports federation when it was formed in 1892.
Early immigrants arriving from Europe introduced skating as a recreational sport in Canada, and speed skating races soon became a regular feature of winter life. In 1887, the Amateur Skating Association of Canada, one of the young country’s first sport associations, was formed.
Did you know? Canada’s first recorded ice skating race took place on the St. Lawrence River in 1854 when three British army officers raced from Montreal to Quebec City.
Olympic speed skating, or long track as it is known today, made its debut at the first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, France. Canada’s first Olympic speed skating medals were won at the 1932 Lake Placid Games, where the races were held in a “pack-style” rather than the traditional paired start. Since the inaugural Winter Olympic Games, new events have been introduced to the long track speed skating programme, including the Team Pursuit at Turin 2006 and the Mass Start at PyeongChang 2018.
Did you know? Jean Wilson captured a pair of medals – gold in the 500m and silver in the 1500m – at the 1932 Olympic Games, where women’s speed skating was featured as a demonstration sport.
Did you know? Women’s speed skating only became part of the Olympic programme in 1960. Sprinter Cathy Priestner was the first Canadian woman to win an official Olympic medal, taking silver in the 500m at the 1976 Innsbruck Games.
The World Allround Championships, an event combining results from sprint and distance races for a single skater, was the only World Championships format in existence until the 1970s. The World Sprint Championships, which combines results from sprint races only, were added in 1972 and the World Single Distance Championships, designed to mirror the Olympic Games and award titles in each distinct event, were established in 1996.
Did you know? Jack McCulloch became the first Canadian male to win a World Championship title in 1897, while Sylvia Burka was the first female to claim the top international prize in 1976.
Team Canada Success
Canadian long track speed skaters have won 42 Olympic medals (10 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze), the country’s greatest total in any winter sport. A total of 27 athletes have proudly stood on the Winter Games podium wearing the maple leaf.
Did you know? Canada’s most decorated Winter Olympian is Cindy Klassen, who won a total of six long track medals, including five at Turin 2006. She is one of only nine Winter Olympians worldwide, and the only Canadian in either summer or winter sport, to win five medals at a single edition of the Games.
Did you know? Clara Hughes is among rare company as one of only two medal-winning speed skaters in the world to have also reached the podium at the Summer Olympic Games, having captured four medals in long track and two in cycling.
Did you know? Canada has three other quadruple Olympic medalists in long track — Gaétan Boucher, Kristina Groves and Denny Morrison.
A number of Canadian athletes have captured five or more World Champion titles over their illustrious careers, paving the way for our next generation of speed skaters: Jeremy Wotherspoon (8), Christine Nesbitt (7), Cindy Klassen (5) and Catriona Le May Doan (5).
Historic Medal Count
RINK
All long track ovals measure 400m in distance, with two curved ends of 180° and an inner curve radius of between 25 and 26 metres. Two racing lanes of at least 4m in width are marked by painted lines on the ice, and by movable blocks of rubber during competition.
The first artificial ice surface used in Olympic competition was during the 1960 Squaw Valley Games. Today, most international competition is held in indoor, covered ovals. This helps to minimize the effects of outdoor temperature, precipitation and wind on the ice quality.
RACES
The objective of long track speed skating is to cover a given distance in the least amount of time. It is the fastest human-powered sport in the world, with skaters reaching speeds of more than 60 km/hr and where one hundredth of a second (0.01) can mean the difference between winning and losing.
Olympic Distances
In the traditional Olympic distances, skaters start each race in pairs, racing against the clock. Skating counterclockwise around the oval, the athletes begin in the inner and outer lanes but change once per lap to ensure that each skater completes the same distance. There is only one round of races per distance at the Olympics, so athletes must make their times count!
Men and women both compete in the 500m (1 ¼ laps), 1000m (2 ½ laps), 1500m (3 ¾ laps) and 5000m (12 ½ laps). The women also have a 3000m (7 ½ laps) race, while the men contest the longest distance at 10,000m (25 laps). The skater with the fastest time once all of the pairs have skated is crowned the victor.
Mass Start
In the Mass Start, up to 24 athletes begin on the start line together and complete 16 laps of the oval. While no passing is allowed in the first lap, three intermediate sprints after the fourth, eighth and twelfth laps award points to the first three skaters to cross the line during that lap (five points for first, three for second and one for third).
The final sprint to the finish line awards 60 points for first, 40 for second and 20 for third, ensuring that the first three skaters to complete the race also reach the podium in the same positions. Those finishing fourth and lower are ranked according to points earned during the race and finishing time, in that order.
Team Pursuit
In the Team Pursuit, two teams of three skaters each begin simultaneously on opposite sides of the oval, with the men completing eight laps and the women skating six laps. Team members take turns leading, with the other skaters following closely behind to take advantage of the lower wind resistance (called “drafting”). The clock stops when all three athletes have crossed the finish line.
Team Sprint
While not an Olympic discipline, World Cup and World Championships competition includes the Team Sprint for both genders. Two teams of three skaters each begin simultaneously on opposite sides of the oval. Each skater on the team leads for one lap and then drops off, so that only one athlete completes the full three laps and crosses the finish line.
Allround and Sprint Competitions
In the World Speed Skating Championships – which combines the former World Allround Championships and World Sprint Championships – results from multiple races and distances are combined to crown a champion. A skater’s time in each race is converted into points using the Sammelagt Point System.
For the 500m, each athlete’s time in seconds is converted directly into points (e.g., 37.65 seconds translates to 37.650 points). So that each distance contributes equally to the total points, times for longer races are converted into seconds then divided by the number of 500m in the event.
Final results are determined by adding each skater’s points for the four distances raced. In the World Sprint Championships, the distances are 500m and 1000m, each skated twice, while the 500m, 1500m, 5000m, and 3000m (women) / 10,000m (men) are contested at the World Allround Championships. The overall winner is the skater with the fewest total points.
RULES
Pairs
The pairs are selected by a draw held the night before each race. Skaters are grouped by performance, with the fastest skaters usually racing in the last pairs. A random draw assigns both the order of athletes and their starting lanes, inner or outer.
Lanes
The skater starting in the inner lane wears a white armband and the skater in the outer lane wears a red armband. On the back straight, skaters change lanes each lap. The skater in the outer lane has the right-of-way when both skaters arrive at the crossover point at the same time.
Skaters are not allowed to skate outside of their lane’s markers, with one exception. The inside skate may cross this line when entering a corner, provided that the gliding skate bearing the athlete’s weight remains within the lane.
Starts
The start of a race occurs in three phases. First, the starting referee tells the athletes to “Go to the start.” Second, the starter cues the skaters with the word “Ready” and waits until they have stopped moving. Finally, after a random pause of 1 to 1.5 seconds, the starter fires the gun and the race begins.
If a skater moves before the gun is fired, they have committed a false start. The referee will raise a red or white flag to indicate the responsible athlete, corresponding to their starting lane and coloured armband. Only one false start may be committed per race; a second infraction will cause a skater to be disqualified.
Mass Start
In the Mass Start, “fair play” is the basic rule of engagement. Skaters must not obstruct other competitors or create dangerous situations in the race. Competitors who are lapped by the leader must stop racing immediately. If a crash occurs in the first lap and consists of six or more skaters, the race will be stopped and restarted.
Officials
Referees oversee all aspects of the competition, including the draw for pairs. A lap recorder keeps track of the laps remaining in each race and rings a bell to signal the start of the last lap.
EQUIPMENT
Skate Blades
The long track skate blade ranges from 38 to 55 cm in length and is about 1.25 mm thick. The carbon steel blade has very little rocker, or curve, compared to hockey and figure skates which allows speed skaters to glide in long, straight lines. The blade on a clapskate detaches at the heel, keeping the blade on the ice longer with each stride and increasing the skater’s pushing power. Skate blades are hand-sharpened to ensure the edges are at perfect 90-degree angles which maximizes efficiency during the push.
Skate Boots
Long track skate boots are made of leather and fit like a glove. The bottom is rigid for extra stability and may be made of molded fibreglass. The upper part of the boot is less rigid and cut lower than a short track boot. Some skaters do not wear socks so they can better feel their skates on the ice.
Skinsuits
Speed skaters minimize air resistance by wearing tight-fitting Lycra suits complete with an aerodynamic hood and thumb loops. An important area of research and development in the sport, teams are always seeking aerodynamic advantages from highly specialized fabrics, new sewing techniques or patterns, and wind tunnel testing of the skinsuits.
Safety Equipment
In the team events and Mass Start, helmets are mandatory for all skaters. Cut-resistant racing suits, including shin guards, neck and ankle protection, as well as gloves, are also necessary in the Mass Start. While not mandatory, most skaters use eyewear for all races to enhance vision and to prevent their eyes from tearing caused by the wind.
TECHNIQUE AND STRATEGY
At the starting line, most skaters adopt a position with their weight evenly distributed between the two skates. The front foot is placed perpendicular to the starting line, while the back foot is placed at an angle, so the initial push is as powerful as possible. Some athletes also use a down-start position, with one hand placed on the ice and his or her skates slightly behind the body. Whatever the technique, all skaters strive for a smooth transition from the short, quick steps of the start to the long, smooth and efficient push of speed skating.
In order to maximize speed while racing, skaters adopt a crouched position. This serves two purposes: to reduce air resistance and to lengthen the sideways push of the leg on the ice, generating more power.
Skaters typically swing their arms side-to-side during starts to help pick up speed and to prevent the body from twisting. As skaters pick up speed, they rest their arms on their back instead of pumping them. In longer races, skaters may place both arms on their back, to conserve energy, and swing only the outer arm on the curve, which helps with balance.
Before each race, skaters evaluate the weather, ice conditions, their physical capabilities and competitors’ times to set a goal for their time. It is critical, especially over long distances, that athletes skate at the same speed during each lap. Coaches play an important role during races, communicating with a skater using lap boards displaying numbers, hand signals and verbal cues to help the athlete maintain consistent lap times and achieve this goal.
