100 Days Before Opening Ceremonies of the Canadian Age Clas Short Track Championship

In 100 days, Campbellton will host the Canadian Age Class Short Track Speed Skating Championship. The Organizing Committee is confident that this major sporting event will generate significant economic spin-offs for the Restigouche area. High intensity sports fans will be able to appreciate performances by the country’s best young athletes of this fast paced and exciting sport.

Many of these competitors will also represent their respective province at the next Canada Winter Games 2011 in Halifax, NS. Some of these elite athletes will also be battling for a spot on the national team in view of competing on the World Cup circuit and possibly at the 2014 or 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

According to Committee President, Mr. Yves Gagnon, "It’s exciting to watch the development of this amateur sport in Restigouche. The Restigouche Comets Speed Skating Club, founded in 2000, has seen a significant gain in popularity following the Bathurst-Campbellton 2003 Canada Winter Games. Now, with only 9 years of speed skating experience under its belt, our region is already up to the challenge of organizing this national event."

Technical Vice-president of the Committee, Mr. Roger Ouellette, adds "Campbellton’s Regional Memorial Civic Center is one of only two venues in the province capable of holding such an event thanks to it’s Olympic size ice surface. We’re confident that we will be able to offer these athletes the best competition possible." This championship will be held at the Regional Memorial Civic Centre from March 26 to 28, 2010. This is a must see event. Come celebrate our passion for amateur sport!
