Speed Skating Canada Cancels Remaining Domestic Championships in 2019-20 Season

Speed Skating Canada (SSC) takes the health and safety of everyone in our community very seriously. As we cannot guarantee the safety of competitors, officials, volunteers, families and fans in the face of the current risks regarding the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), SSC staff, with the support of the Board of Directors, have made the difficult decision to cancel the remaining domestic events of the 2019-20 season.

These include:

  • Short Track Canada Cup Final (March 13-15)
  • Long Track Canada Cup 4 (March 19-22)
  • Short Track Canada Cup Junior Final (March 20-22)
  • Canadian Youth Short Track Championships - East (March 28-29)
  • Canadian Youth Short Track Championships - West (March 28-29)

This decision was made in consideration of guidance from the Sport Medicine Advisory Committee, based on direction from provincial and national health authorities, and in conversation with hosting venues. We wish to thank all of those, in particular our local organizing committees, for their efforts over the recent days and hours to evaluate this fast-evolving situation.

SSC has begun working with the local hosts of each event to coordinate logistics of the cancellations. Participants should expect to receive additional information about registration and accommodation refunds in due time; the process for each event will differ. Those with air travel reservations should contact their airlines directly to discuss options for cancelling or receiving credit for their bookings.

The SSC High Performance teams will move quickly to determine the impact of these cancellations on selection and carding processes for the upcoming season. Amended Bulletins will be issued as soon as possible.

Thank you to our athletes, volunteers, PTSOs and community members for your patience and understanding.
