Long Track Talent Development Program Head Coach

Position Overview:

Speed Skating Canada (SSC) is the national sport organization for speed skating in Canada.

The Long Track Talent Development Program Head Coach is responsible for the coordination and delivery of the talent identification and development strategy and program. In the carrying-out of their functions and responsibilities, the Long Track Talent Development Program Head Coach will work closely with the Long Track Program Director, the National Team Coaches, the Regional Mentors and the Talent Identification Management Committee. The position is based at the National Training Centre (Olympic Oval) in Calgary, Alberta.

Under direction of the Long Track Program Director, the Long Track Talent Development Program Head Coach’s key responsibilities are to:

  • Coordinate and implement a recruitment strategy to attract a high quality training group of 14-17 year old potential athletes in the Calgary area
  • Establish, develop and implement the most appropriate talent development plan and the best delivery models/centres to achieve future medal outcomes in LTSS at the Train-to-Train and Learning to Compete stages of development.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive YTP for the identified talent development program athletes
  • Monitor and review athlete performance and coordinate the provision of feedback to athletes for improvement.
  • Attend events such as training camps and competitions and coordinate talent development activities.
  • Work closely with CSC Calgary designated staff and SSC staff with similar mandates in other regions to develop best practices strategies for the identification, recruitment and retention of potential LTSS athletes.
  • Provide mentorship to provincial and regional coaches on the delivery requirements for a high quality LTSS program for the train to train athlete.

The ideal candidate must have the appropriate levels of coaching certification and experience, demonstrated through success at both the national and international level. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary. The Long Track Talent Development Program Head Coach requires energy, enthusiasm and the commitment to strive for excellence, while contributing positively to the team approach of the long track high performance program.
